WHAT IS TLF CREATIVE?

TLF Creative is an Orchestra and Arts based group that provides an inclusive and creative space for legal professionals, which was established with the assistance of our patron, the Hon. Anthe Philippides, formerly a Justice of the Queensland Court of Appeal. The legal industry is stressful, so TLF Creative gives you the opportunity to take a break from the stress of work and express your musical and artistic talents alongside like-minded professionals. Our goal with TLF Creative is to foster collaboration, combat isolation, promote positive mental health and enable creative and talented legal professionals to meet socially, on a regular basis, and collectively pursue musical goals.

OUR INITIATIVES

LawchestraQ

The Queensland Lawchestra (‘LawchestraQ’) is a classical orchestra comprising law students, solicitors, barristers and other members of the legal profession from Brisbane. It rehearses fortnightly at the beautiful Old Museum Building in Bowen Hills. Concerts are held regularly throughout the year. We also provide opportunities for smaller chamber groups to perform at TLF Creative and other industry events.

The Lawchestra is a fun and welcoming environment for people involved with the law in Brisbane to continue (or revive) their passion for music-making. We are seeking musicians of all abilities, so don’t be afraid if you haven’t picked up your instrument for a while!

Big Band & Jam Sessions

In 2020, TLF Creative launched the Lawchestra Big Band to allow a more diverse range of instrumentalists to participate in our ensembles - including saxophones, trombones, trumpets, guitar, bass, keyboard and drums. The Big Band rehearses on Tuesdays in the Old Museum Building in alternating fortnights to the Lawchestra.

We also plan to launch regular jam sessions open to any instrumentalist at any level. Each jam session will feature one or two charts which we will arrange for the group in the session. Every musician will have an option to try soloing, regardless of skill level. The sessions will be chill and informal and a perfect opportunity for less experienced musicians to learn from the more experienced in the group. If this is something you might be interested in, use our expression of interest form below to stay up to date. If you are an experienced musician with lots of jam experience, please let us know!

Events

As well as our musical ensembles, TLF Creative hold a variety of events.

In 2019, our panel event titled ‘Arts, Law and Life: Perspectives from the Profession’ brought together a panel of individuals who have achieved success in both legal and creative pursuits, and also included performances by our string quintet.

In 2020, we hosted a launch event featuring performances by his Honour Judge Dearden of the District Court and our Lawchestra flute choir, as well as an online trivia event.

Beginning our expansion to the visual arts in 2021, we hosted our annual launch event at Brush and Barrel Newstead and organised a group tour to see the European Masterpieces exhibition at GOMA. Our Lawchestra and Big Band also performed an outdoor concert at the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens as part of Brisbane City Council’s ‘Bands in Parks’ initiative.

In 2022, our annual launch event was held at Birrunga Gallery & Dining in Brisbane City and featured a panel discussion on the intersection of the arts, law and wellbeing. A broad cross-section of the legal profession was represented on the panel, and Brisbane-based brass quintet Brass Half Full as well as members of the LawchestraQ flute section provided musical entertainment throughout the night.

In 2022 and 2023, our Lawchestra and Big Band performed a Sunday afternoon concert at Brisbane City Hall as part of Brisbane City Council’s ‘Bands in Parks’ initiative.

CHAMBER GROUPS

Following the successful debut performance of our chamber group at our panel event in 2019, we have continued to expand our chamber program.

We have a number of chamber groups available for hire, including our string quartet, brass quintet and flute ensemble. Our chamber groups have performed at a number of events including the Legal Profession Breakfast in support of Women’s Legal Service Queensland, QLS Legal Profession Dinner & Awards, UQ Justice and the Law Society Gala, UQ Pro Bono Centre's 10th Anniversary event & Pride in Law's Annual Address. Contact us at creative@thelegalforecast.com to find out more about hiring our ensembles.

Informally, we also encourage our members to get involved in forming their own small ensembles.

Legally Bound Book Club

In 2021-2022, TLF Creative in collaboration with Level Twenty Seven Chambers hosted a book club called Legally Bound. Meetings were held quarterly as an informal conversation group for law students, legal practitioners and advisors to read and discuss non-fiction and fiction texts which raise issues impacting the law.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

If you are interested in joining one of our ensembles, or staying up to date on our events and future initiatives, you can fill out the form below to express your interest. TLF Creative run Lawchestra, Big Band and regular Jam Sessions for lawyers, law students and others associated with the legal profession in Brisbane. Therefore, we are calling on anyone involved with the law in Brisbane who plays an instrument (i.e. strings, woodwind, brass, guitar, bass, percussion etc) to express their interest in being part of our ensembles, which rehearse from March to November.

In the future we hope to expand not only to other ensembles but also to other art forms such as drama, art and dance. As such, please let us know in the comment section below if you would be interested in any other activities or ensembles.
